For the dough, you will need:- 3 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 packet of active dry yeast
- 1 cup of warm water
- 10 cups of water
- 2/3 cup of baking soda
- 1 egg, beaten
- Salt or pretzel salt
Instructions
Step 1: Making the Dough
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Slowly pour in the warm water while stirring until the dough comes together. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.Step 2: Shaping the Pretzels
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Bring the 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 20 inches in length. Twist the rope into a pretzel shape and press the ends onto the dough to seal. Repeat with the remaining dough.Step 3: Boiling the Pretzels
Place the pretzels, one at a time, into the boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place on a greased baking sheet.Step 4: Topping and Baking the Pretzels
Brush the beaten egg over each pretzel and sprinkle with salt or pretzel salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.Nutrition
