Introduction

Chicken Dhansak is a popular Indian dish that originated from the Parsi community. Ingredients

For the marinade:
  • 1 lb boneless chicken, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
For the Dhansak:
  • 1 cup lentils, soaked overnight
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 3-4 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, potatoes, eggplant, etc.)
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped pineapple
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Instructions

Marinade

1. In a bowl, combine the chicken, yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, and salt.
2. Mix well, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Dhansak

1. In a large pot, heat oil over medium-high heat.
2. Add cumin and mustard seeds and cook until they start to splutter.

3. Add onions and green chilies and cook until onions are soft and translucent.
4. Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute.
5. Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and garam masala powder. Cook for a minute.
6. Add the soaked lentils and mix well.
7. Add enough water to cover the lentils and bring to a boil.
8. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer until the lentils are tender.
9. In a separate pan, cook the mixed vegetables until they are tender.
10. Add the cooked vegetables, chopped tomatoes, and pineapple to the lentils.
11. Add the marinated chicken and tamarind paste.
12. Mix well, cover, and simmer until the chicken is cooked through.
13. Add salt to taste.
14. Serve hot with rice or naan.
